# Overview

> Understand how a mobile phlebotomist visits a patient to collect a sample for laboratory testing.

With mobile phlebotomy, a phlebotomist visits the patient's home or office, collects the sample, and delivers it to the partner laboratory. This modality requires an appointment at a supported address.

## How it works

1. Place an order through the Junction Dashboard or the [Create Order endpoint](/api-reference/lab-testing/create-order).
2. Junction validates the order and creates a requisition with the selected partner laboratory.
3. After the order reaches `requisition_created`, the patient can receive [instructions for booking the draw](/lab/workflow/communications#mobile-phlebotomy).
4. Book or request an appointment with a phlebotomy provider. See [Service Tiers](/lab/at-home-phlebotomy/service-tiers) for the available scheduling workflows.
5. The phlebotomist visits the patient, collects the sample, and delivers it to the laboratory.
6. Junction makes results available as structured data and a PDF. See [Result Formats](/lab/results/result-formats).

<Note>
  Some Teams can schedule an appointment before the requisition is created. See [Scheduling Appointments Before a Requisition Has Been Created](/lab/at-home-phlebotomy/order-appointment-lifecycle#scheduling-appointments-before-a-requisition-has-been-created).
</Note>

## What to plan for

* **Coverage:** Appointment availability depends on the patient's address and the phlebotomy providers serving that area. Use the [Area Info endpoint](/api-reference/lab-testing/area-info) before presenting mobile phlebotomy as an option.
* **Patient age:** Phlebotomy appointments are not supported for patients under 18 years old.
* **Address:** Availability requests require a reachable street address, including a street number and unit where applicable.
* **Active appointments:** A patient cannot have more than one active appointment with the same phlebotomy provider.

## Instructions for the phlebotomist

Use the following fields to provide information to the phlebotomist:

* Set `access_notes` on the patient's address when creating the order. Use this field for gate codes, parking instructions, entrances, and other details needed to reach the collection location. Junction forwards these notes to the provider when an appointment is booked or rescheduled.
* Set `appointment_notes` when booking, requesting, or rescheduling an appointment. Use this field for instructions specific to that appointment. Appointment notes can be changed when the appointment is rescheduled.
